After years of conflict, rebellion, and oppression, on July 4, 1946, the US declared the independence of the Philippines. Since then, Filipinos can finally live as themselves, with no worries of any invaders and colonizers. What our fellow Filipinos hardly fought for back then has been achieved.
"Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan." —Jose Rizal
( “He who does not know how to look back at where he came from will never get to his destination.”)
The quote from a prominent Filipino figure strikes me. Remembering where you came from is important, especially if you have never looked into your history - like me! A Filipino who has spent most of my life in a foreign country, reading about our history and learning about it is fascinating. Subjects like 21st Century Literature and Contemporary Philippine Arts enhance so much knowledge about the Philippines’ past they have in store; it is such a delight indulging in our culture and history. What better way to celebrate the Philippines’ culture than Buwan ng Wika? A time where we, Filipinos, not only celebrate our language but also reminisce and value our history.
This year’s Buwan ng Wika is about the Filipino’s independence, breaking free from the idea of colonization. Though we may have been influenced by other countries, we must remember and be confident of our own culture. A cultural event is not something we should miss. Thankfully, here at Chrisitan Legacy, we celebrate such a momentous event. Even as we celebrate yet another Buwan ng Wika in our homes, the event is still alive and kicking. CL held this online event to remind students of our heritage, language, and uniqueness. It has brought pride and accomplishment to the Buwan ng Wika organizer and Filipino Teacher, Joseph Laurena. He said,
“Nakipagpartisipasyon lahat ng mga mag aaral at mga magulang ngayong taon kaya naman naging magandanang daloy ng mga gawain.” (“For this school year, the students & their parents' participation made the flow of activities well.”) He also said that because of the participation, this year’s Buwan ng Wika went smoothly and successfully.
Thank you to all who participated in this event! For the next few publications, we will be posting the better written works of the CL Students who joined the contests. Excited to see what our students have written during this year’s Buwan ng Wika. Enjoy!
