MOVIE REVIEW >> Klaus

There are many well known Christmas movies, for example, Home Alone, Spirited, The Princess Switch, and many more. What do you notice about these examples?

All these movies are live-action. When was the last time you heard of an animated Christmas movie? There are only a few that come to mind, but what would be considered the best animated Christmas movie? Is it The Grinch? Or is it Polar Express? In the opinion of many critics, and my own opinion, the best one has to be Klaus.

Klaus is probably the best animated Christmas movie. I’d even go as far as to say it’s the best Christmas movie I have ever seen! Let’s start off with the story. I will do my best to keep the spoilers to the minimum.

It starts off with a pampered boy who is the son of a postmaster. They handle all the mail and delivery in the world. His father had enough with his son’s attitude, so he sent him to a town where he had to make a certain amount of deliveries. If he is able to get his quota, he can return to his life of luxury, if not then he loses everything. The catch is, the town is awful. They are all so mean to each other, and because of that they do not send each other anything. Making his job twice as hard. Through the process of trying to get out of the town, he discovers something more important. Something he’s been missing. What was that something? Watch the movie to find out!

Personally, I think execution is more important than concept. It’s great if you have both, but if I were to pick one, it’d have to be execution. There are many movies with great ideas, but awful execution.

Klaus' story was pretty straight forward. A man in his 20’s needs to reach his quota, in order to return to his life of luxury. Along the way he finds something more. Pretty simple right? Even if the story is considered simple, the way they write the characters were incredible. I really felt for each and every character. The pacing was just right as well. I never felt bored during the movie, I was hooked!

Are these what make Klaus so good? Yes! But there is one more thing, the animation. The way they animated it was so good! They animated it in 2D, but it looks 3D. They definitely made use of shading, and lighting to get that effect. Another thing that adds, is the backgrounds. Usually in 2D animation, the backgrounds are just paintings. In Klaus though, the characters and backgrounds feel like they are in the same realm. It makes it feel so complete. The art style is just so gorgeous! It’s just like eye candy.

Would I recommend this movie? Yes, 100% yes. Klaus is a movie good for kids and adults. If you want a chill movie, go watch it. I highly recommend it!
